Mr Iyengar has stated “Your bodies are in the past; your minds in the future. When you do yoga, they come together in the present”. Iyengar Yoga classes are characterized by precision in alignment, the timing in and sequencing of postures, and the use of props. The transformative benefits of Iyengar Yoga are profound, including bodily health and vitality, mental clarity and an overwhelming sense of well-being. A calming of the nervous system through the integration of body, mind and breath will bring forth the understanding that all Yoga, when done precisely and correctly, is therapeutic.
These series offer a systematic and intelligent progression of study. Classes focus on both strength and flexibility, balance and correct body alignment. Iyengar classes also cultivate concentration and “meditation in action” to bring about total alignment in body, mind and spirit. Inversions and their importance are also introduced. Modifications always offered when not possible.
What is Iyengar Yoga?
Meet your Iyengar Yoga Teacher, Nicolo (Nicky) Fonte
For as long as he can remember, Nicky has been searching for meaning in all that he does. When he discovered Iyengar Yoga 25 years ago, he was unequivocally hooked. The profound connections, threads, and integration of body, mind, and soul that he discovered on the Yoga mat began to weave seamlessly into his 'real life' in an overwhelmingly positive way. He recalls thinking, “This is it. I found the way.”
He believes that through the practice of asana and pranayama, with exquisite awareness, one cultivates a presence of mind that awakens the deeper, more subtle aspects of Yoga—as a journey toward the Self.
Although new to the York area for less than a year, Nicky has already established a loyal following of students. His instructions are clear and concise without oversimplifying, and his thoughtful demonstrations further deepen your understanding of the Iyengar method. He is delighted to be teaching Yoga in the tradition of B.K.S. Iyengar and to share that inspiration, knowledge, and joy.
THE IYENGAR METHOD
At the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India, classes follow a distinctive monthly sequence known as the “Pune Cycle.”
Each week emphasizes a different category of asanas: standing poses in the first week, forward extensions or twists or arm balancing in the second, back extensions in the third, and restorative poses and pranayama in the final week.
In every 8-class series, we follow 2 Pune Cycles, exploring the essential actions and principles of each category of asanas while always emphasizing the integration of body, mind, and breath, cultivating greater awareness and presence in our practice.

Common Questions about Iyengar Yoga
-
The answer is no you do not. I recommend having some yoga experience to come to a General level class but specifically Iyengar Yoga experience is not required to attend.
-
No. The phrase “Iyengar Yoga” describes the method of yoga developed by B.K.S. Iyengar and his family. Certified Iyengar Yoga Teachers (CIYT) are educated in the yoga method set forth by B.K.S. Iyengar. They have passed a standardized assessment and maintain ongoing education, practice, and commitment to the Iyengar Yoga method only. To be granted a certification credential, teachers must pass an assessment of standards in three categories: a demonstrated practice of asanas, a written exam, and demonstrated teaching skills. These skills and standards are measured in years of practice, not hours.
-
Iyengar classes are designed as classes (think classroom) where the subject of yoga is being taught and not necessarily asking the students to just follow along as in a 'routine'. 90 minutes allows for better preparation of the body and mind towards whatever the focus of the class may be.
